The problem

Your buyer's shortlist forms weeks before they call anyone.

A distribution center operator starts an automation evaluation long before an integrator or a manufacturer hears about it. Increasingly, that research runs through AI search. They type the question, read the answer, and build a list.

Most models return the global players by default: Honeywell, Dematic, AutoStore, Hyster. For an integrator, that means the firm with forty installs in the region, sitting forty minutes from the facility, goes unnamed. For a manufacturer, it means a better-fit system never makes the comparison. If you sell to operations too small for Dematic, that answer is where you lose the deal.

And you rarely see it happen. There's no bounce rate on a conversation you weren't part of. You find out at the RFP stage, or you never find out.

Where you get skipped

The question changes with what you sell. The default answer doesn't.

Systems integrators

Example buyer question"Who can integrate AMRs with our existing conveyor in a 400,000 square foot DC near Columbus?"

What the model does
Names the global integrators first. Your regional project history lives in sales decks, not on pages a model can read.
What gets you named
Project-level proof. Named sites, facility types, the systems you tied together, and the region you cover.
Automation and robotics manufacturers

Example buyer question"What's the best goods-to-person system for a mid-size 3PL shipping 20,000 orders a day?"

What the model does
Lists the brands everyone already knows. A better-fit system from a mid-market manufacturer never makes the comparison.
What gets you named
Application-level proof. The order profiles your system fits, the performance behind it, and the integrators who deploy it.

What we believe

Expertise should decide who gets named. Today, headcount, ad budget, and booth size decide it.

Integrators hold the project history. Manufacturers hold the performance data. Both hold the customer stories buyers need. Most of it sits in engineers' heads and sales decks, where no model can read it.

The industry study

Find out what not publishing is costing you

Most integrators and automation manufacturers aren't sure what content to publish, so they publish nothing. That silence is the opening. Buyers now search for expertise by asking a model.

So we ran the study. We asked ChatGPT and Claude the ten questions a VP of supply chain asks when evaluating integrators and automation, then scored every answer against 55 firms doing $20M to $500M in revenue. The industry study includes:

  • 01 /All fourteen findings, including three that cut against our own data
  • 02 /The complete grid, every model and condition, with hit rates
  • 03 /All ten prompts, verbatim, so you can run the study yourself
  • 04 /The 24 companies a model named, and which conditions found them
  • 05 /The method and its limits, stated plainly enough to argue with
  • 06 /Why this category has no ranked list a mid-market firm can appear on

The most visible firms published what only they could say.

A clear point of view predicted visibility better than volume did. Here's what the named firms had in common, and the first move for integrators and for manufacturers on each.

Seen in visible firms

Put an engineer's name on an opinion

Pieces signed by a named expert, saying something a competitor would argue with. A model cites a position. It skips a brochure.

Integrators
Have your lead engineer take a side on a call buyers get wrong, like retrofitting existing conveyor versus starting over.
Manufacturers
Have your product engineer state where your system fits and where it doesn't. Buyers trust the limit as much as the claim.
Seen in visible firms

Publish numbers only you have

Original figures from your own installs or your own study. Nobody else can cite them first, so models cite you.

Integrators
Pull one table from your project history. Throughput before and after, payback months, time to go-live.
Manufacturers
Publish field performance across your installed base. Rates per hour, uptime, labor hours saved per shift.
Seen in visible firms

Write case studies with the constraint and the cost

A named customer, real numbers, the problem that forced the project, and what it cost to leave it alone.

Integrators
Rewrite your best case study around the constraint. Facility size, order profile, the bottleneck, the number that moved.
Manufacturers
Tell it from the operator's side. The application, the integrator who deployed it, and what changed on the floor.
Seen in visible firms

Build something with a partner

Work made with a customer, an industry association, or a technology partner. Their audience and their site carry your name further than yours alone.

Integrators
Co-author a piece with a manufacturer you deploy. Their product pages and partner directories carry your name.
Manufacturers
Co-author with an integrator partner. Buyers ask who can install it, so the answer should include your network.
Our recommendation

Answer the buyer's question in their words

Buyers ask a model who to call for a specific job, or which system fits a specific operation. Your site should answer that question plainly.

Integrators
Write one page per region and facility type you serve. Name the systems you integrate.
Manufacturers
Write one page per application and order profile your system fits. Name the integrators who deploy it.
Our recommendation

Get your expertise into the trade press

Models read the same publications your buyers read. A bylined piece or a quoted engineer there does work in search, in sales, and in AI answers.

Integrators
Pitch one project story with real numbers to a trade editor this quarter.
Manufacturers
Pitch your strongest field data to a trade editor this quarter. Lead with the data.

Each of these takes weeks. None of it fits around a team of two already running the trade show calendar, the website, and the sales collateral. Trelliswork is the marketing team that turns your engineers' expertise into published work, without adding headcount.

Your company report

The industry study covers 55 firms. Your company report covers yours.

The industry study shows what happened across the category. Your company report shows what happens when a buyer asks about your corner of it, using your buyer's ten questions.

  • One company report per firm
  • We reply within one business day
  • No calls unless you want one
  • We never publish your result or use your name without written permission
  1. 01 /

You tell us who you compete with

Your name, work email and three competitors, in the form below.

  2. 02 /

We write the ten questions your buyer asks

As an integrator, the way buyers look for a partner. As a manufacturer, the way they shop for a system. Specific to your facility types and your region.

  3. 03 /

We run them across both models, three passes each

With different memory settings, so one lucky answer doesn't count as a result.

  4. 04 /

You see every company named, and where you were

Where you showed up, where you didn't, and the raw answers so you can check our work. Then you decide what to publish first.

What's at stake

Citations build slowly. So does the gap.

If nothing changes

The default answer keeps winning.

  • Buyers build shortlists from answers you're not in, and you never see the deal.
  • The firms that publish now become the names models repeat. That position takes months to earn and months to take back.
  • Your best expertise stays in engineers' heads and sales decks.
When you show up

Your name is in the answer.

  • An operator asks who can integrate goods-to-person for a mid-size 3PL in your region, or which system fits their order profile, and the answer includes you.
  • Sales starts hearing "I read your engineer's piece on that" in first calls.
  • The same work pays off in search, in sales conversations, and in the trade press as well as in AI answers.

Questions

Before you ask.

Can I reproduce this?

Yes. All ten prompts are in the industry study with the exact model conditions. Run them and you'll get a version of what we got, though not an identical one. That variance between runs is finding 3.

Is this an SEO service?

No. Search ranking is a different problem with a different playbook. This is about whether a model names you when somebody asks it who to call.

Do buyers use AI to find vendors?

Some do, and the share is hard to measure. AI tools send under 1% of visits to manufacturing sites, but a click count misses the buyer who reads an AI answer and then searches your name. Google's AI Overviews already appear on 57% of manufacturing searches. That's why we recommend work that pays off in search, sales, and the trade press as well as in AI answers.

Our company was in the industry study. Where did we land?

The industry study shows whether your firm was one of the 24 named. For the detail, request your company report or write to us, and we'll tell you exactly what we saw for your firm across every run. We won't publish it, and we won't use your name in anything without written permission.

How long does it take to start showing up?

Longer than most people expect. Model citations take months to move. Original research and a real collaboration take weeks each to produce. Anyone promising a faster number is guessing.
